| Well, everyone - this is the last entry here. I will be closing up shop here at xanga to go to better places... namely my own personal webspace. I've got another blog set up, and I would like to have everyone come and read/take part/poke fun/comment/bookmark/live at this site. It's called the Spot. and it's at this link. The one right here. . It's hosted by one of our school's systems that I'm administrating, so have a blast, all of you, and I'll see you at the Spot. | | |
| For those of you not in the know, I'm up in Dubuque all summer for work. That's why I wasn't able to do any Guild shows this summer.
All right guys (especially you guild people), I have some amazing news...
Currently at Clarke we are going through our registration/orientation of new students (Called the CORE program). Anyway, I was helping out at the Choir/Band booth yesterday (I know, music geek. Live with it.) and my choir director (Francis Vogt, hereby referred to as Fran), my vocal instructor (John Lease, hereby referred to as John), and myself started talking about the upcoming choir trip. Fran has got it narrowed down to a few places, all of them in Europe. After a bit, they started talking about the Japan trip 2 years ago. I told John that I would really like to go, since I've been studying that culture for a while now (read: anime, manga.). He then turns to me and says, "well, here's a proposition for you. At the beginning of the school year, there will be a exchange student coordinator here with a group of Japanese students. You can talk to him, I know that there's a program that you would be good for - over the summer, the have a camp over there for students to learn English at. You have a good ear for languages - if we find you a Japanese tutor, you could go over and teach English at this camp."
My response outside: "Yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun!" My response inside: "OMFG!!!1!!!one!! SWEET!!!!!!!!!! I"M GOING!!!
Ahem...
So, the question I pose to you, especially those in Guild: Should I go? I know I promised to be around to do a show next year, but if I take this offer, then I wouldn't be able to do any shows, much like this year. But, it is a fantastic opportunity, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
Let me know what you think.
Chris

| Well, first of all, I finally found this again after three months. That's the first big surprise of the day.
It's been quite a fun day at that. We had a philosophical debate running for almost four hours today with some of my classmates - namely, Ben Drury and Sean Mooney.
It all started in my Fundamentals of Philosophy class (PHIL 110 for those who like cataloging). We were discussing whether or not our lifelines were determined or we were free to make our own decisions. Ben was arguing on the point of determinism, stating "Consider that God exists, and is all-powerful. If so, then God can see into the future. If the future exists in this manner, then we have our futures already laid out for us, so we have no free will." We discussed this after class, and I brought up the point that if God doesn't live on a similar plane of existence, then how is his vision of the future leading us? However, Ben could not be swayed.
Discussion then moved down the hall and downstairs, to our Music Theory class, where Sean joined in. I had another point to bring up, but they were too busy discussing and recapping the discussion in it's present form. We threw things back and forth sparsely in Theory, then headed for lunch.
Lunch is where things really started heating up in the discussion. I suggested that if God was omnipotent, then he has the ability to self-limit what he can do, and still be all-powerful, thereby not looking into the future. Ben then said that, if God doesn't look into the future, then by denying it, he proves that it exists, and our paths are still predetermined. Sean said that God does not see time in the same way we do - that is, God sees all time - past, present, and future - as present to him. Ben was taken aback at this, but still kept his point, that God could still see our future. After some mentions of Schrodinger's cat, I said, "Assume that for each choice you make, a number of parallel dimensions form, one for each of your decisions. If you see free will as the freedom to choose, then it won't exist. However, if you see free will as our perception of us making a decision, and traveling on one predetermined dimensional path out of an infinite number of dimensions, then we have the perception that we have made a free choice."
We took this discussion out of lunch, and into the hallway, where we met up with three of our philosophy department heads, and continued discussion on the topic, coming to the eventual conclusion that free will exists, provided that God as an omnicient being exists, if and only if there are multiple dimensional timelines.
A very fun discussion.
QOTD: "Well then, I guess the cat is both simultaneously in and out of the bag, huh?" --me, at lunch today. | | |
| Updates... Hehe... that didn't happen.
Anyway, not much here, just a new QOTD:
"Yeah, their will save must suck. Pumpkins don't care."
--Garrin Jost, on a timed D&D scenario that ends at
midnight with all characters turning into pumpkins.
